PowerPC is a RISC processor most notably used by Apple between the late 90s and mid 2000s. This article primarily covers Macintosh PowerPC (macppc) computers.
Booting
MacPPC uses OpenFirmware, a standard not dissimilar in concept to UEFI. Upon starting, OpenFirmware looks for the following files in order:
- hd:,\\:tbxi
- hd:,\ppc\bootinfo.txt
- hd:,%BOOT
The comma tells the firmware to search every partition found on the hard drive. If nothing is found, you are sent to the interpreter. Supported file systems include FAT and ext2.
