Split page?
This page is a whole bunch of topics:
- Bootloader choices -- nicely written
- Firmware choices -- not only lacks any explanation, it omits CoreBoot, OpenFirmware (a possibility on x86 with CoreBoot), ARC, ARCS, and devices intended to boot from internal Flash memory or other ROM (And that's just the ones I've heard of! lol)
- A detailed look into loading the kernel with just one of those firmware choices
- Things a bootloader should support
I can't see how to organize these disparate things into one article. Should the page have a section on loading the kernel for each of the firmware choices? No, loading the kernel with UEFI is nicely explained in another page. I propose:
- Move "How do I load the kernel (BIOS)?" into its own page
- Fill in the firmware choices section with things actually useful to making a decision, especially BIOS vs. UEFI but also a little look into the other options
- Retain bootloader choices and things a bootloader should support
- Adding a section on boot media, but rather than try to list every one, lump them into categories, each with overall pros and cons, brief notes on each firmware, and links to the firmware pages for more info. Categories:
- Internal Flash
- Attached Media (including hard disks)
- Network
Any thoughts? Yes, I will help with the work when I can, but for such big changes I thought I should ask for opinions first. Eekee 15:53, 3 May 2019 (CDT)
Re: Split page?
I would tend to agree; this should also include placing this page more prominently on the Main Page and Bare Bones and Meaty Skeleton. no92 04:27, 4 May 2019 (CDT)
